I’m not upset that I’ve stuck with VELMA – the last two episodes, FOG FEST and A VELMA IN THE WOODS, have been the best of the series so far, topping last week’s episode. Not to repeat myself from last week (although it is Groundhog Day…), but these episodes feel like what the show was pitched as.
FOG FEST felt like the most SCOOBY-DOO episode we’ve had so far; from a classic door chase scene to masked menaces and even seeing the gang together for the first time, it was nice to be reminded of our source material. Not sure whether to reward for plus or minus points for creating a story that revolves around using the term “fog king.” Definitely minus points for a weirdly racist facial hair comment.
VELMA IN THE WOODS is slightly worse but does the most for the story so far…but that’s not saying much, considering how little of the show has been focused on the central mystery at hand. It is goofy, mildly funny, and even sweet at times, providing more character development than we’ve been used to.
The latest two episodes of VELMA are available to stream now on HBO Max.
