Season two of UNSTABLE is just as whacky and quirky as when it first premiered. The show can be said to be about keeping a tech company, Dragon, profitable while it innovates ways to save our planet, but it really is so much more. Relationships of all kinds are at its core, especially the bond between father and son.
Rob Lowe and his real-life son, John Owen Lowe create and star in this series. They continually play at the yin and yang constant pull of finding that balance between an adult child and his parent. It is that search for independence that triggers each moment between these two characters. Rob is the CEO of a huge biotech company, so money is not a factor. He is brilliant and world-renowned. John must find many similarities in their relationship both on-screen and off. The two of them have impeccable timing together. They innately know how long to give a punchline time to breathe. It is like watching two halves of a soul.
The ensemble is brilliant as well. The satirical, dry humor is what gives UNSTABLE its comedic edge. Each employee in this company plays their role to further the exploration of office couplings whether they are just friendships or burgeoning on an affair. They give the necessary flair to an everyday workplace filled with genius scientists. Their stories are fun and beg for more backstories in the future.
UNSTABLE boasts some sharp, fresh one-liners and zingers to add more punch to each plot. The pacing is fast and sometimes even fanatic while still being totally entertaining. It is a kick to watch and easy to binge in one sitting. I know I did.
UNSTABLE ended with a possible new direction for another season. I would be up for it. After all, โEllis is for U.โ
It is streaming on Netflix.
