Adhir Kalyan is starting community college classes on UNITED STATES OF AL. This is a momentous step for Al who feels education is a huge privilege, especially for those not born in this country.
Al immediately finds out there are still many English words he does not understand, even though he was an Afghanistan interpreter. He feels “less than” and intimidated. Riley (Parker Young) inspires Al to feel more secure in his own skin, even after he screws up by “helping” Al in the wrong way.
UNITES STATES OF AL is a simple, themed show this week. It is all about continuing to be there for each other, and not allowing your frightened ego to talk yourself out of what you want in life. These are lessons we all need to be reminded about on a daily basis. Humbling, exhausting, but necessary.
