The “Big Three” trilogy comes to a close on THIS IS US with another road trip. This time it centers around Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown). It’s tough to talk about how this episode affected me without sharing personal details about my own life. I’ve said previously that THIS IS US has the magical ability to connect me with my mom. And as I was watching the relationship between Randall and Rebecca come full circle on their journey, I couldn’t help but think about her.
Since season one, Randall has been the rock in the Pearson family. He would move “heaven and earth” to ensure Rebecca was safe. And that is precisely the delicate balance of mother/son this show depicts that’s so relatable. Heck, even in simple moments where Rebecca looks at Randall, it felt like my mother looking proudly at me. From his ambitious reading habits at the library to his mom collecting items about him for her “memory box,” it felt so close to home.
In THIS IS US, Rebecca is sick. My mom also has a disability, and just like Randall, I feel the overwhelming need to take care of her. Yet, my mom would tell me what Rebecca did in part one of the “Big Three” trilogy if I helped too much – “You will not make your lives smaller because of me.” And that is the beauty of this show. It’s full of so many carefully constructed moments that feel like they are based on others’ real-life “memory boxes.”
So, to Dan Fogelman. Thank you again for reminding me “who my biggest fan” is. My mother.
The latest episode is available on NBC, Peacock, and Hulu.
