THE TONY AWARDS SHOW 🤩

THE TONY AWARD SHOW was broadcast live on June 8th for a mere three hours and ten minutes. I am not complaining. As a former theatre Arts teacher for 35 years, I can never get enough of Broadway, but award shows are tricky. Audiences either love them or hate them. This year was no exception. There were many up-and-down moments to be felt by viewers, whether lucky enough to be sitting in the audience or relaxing on their couch at home. I will not list the winners, as this information is readily available on the internet. Instead, I will offer my impressions of what was the best and worst.

There are several outstanding performances delivered on stage. My top favorite is the original HAMILTON cast reunited, creating a “mixed tape” from this fabulous show. Seeing everyone together again makes you realize why HAMILTON took Broadway by storm and changed the face of musicals forever.

Audra McDonald gave the most jaw- dropping performance from GYPSY. Watching her reinforced why she holds the record for most Tony nominations and wins. She is phenomenal.

Nichole Scherzinger brought the house to its feet with her brilliant singing from the musical revival of SUNSET BOULEVARD. Her performance brought me to tears. A magnificent moment.

The host, Cynthia Erivo, is an extraordinary singer and performer. Her closing number was spot-on fantastic. Her opening song was exceptional as well, but the beginning production bit was a little underwhelming. Hearing her belt it out surrounded by Gospel singers was awesome. Listening to her soothes my soul.

It is also imperative to mention the acceptance speeches in each category. So many were tear-jerkers. It is special to be able to feel the awe and gratitude in their voices truly. They were humbled and, at times, quite funny. (OH, MARY) it humanizes them. We can relate and imagine what we would say if we were so lucky to be in their shoes.

The worst moments must be the length of the show. The presenter’s banter is not necessary. The tape of Erivo singing off the winners was annoying as well. I often ask why hosts have to change clothes so many times. It does not affect the outcome of giving out awards. Some of the comedic bits in between presentations did not go over well. Oprah receiving a toy car was lame and outdated.

A few years ago, Tony’s would share the winners from the tech side of theatre. It was a treat to see the names of the set, costume, hair, makeup, lighting, and sound personnel projected across the screen. I would always show this to my techies. It can be very inspirational. I would say theatre was a team effort. Everyone behind the scenes was just as important as those in front of the curtain.

THE TONY AWARDS SHOW is not everyone’s cup of tea. I understand, but shows like this encourage the next generation of artists, and that is extremely important for the continuity of live theatre. Someone sitting at home could easily be the next major talent of Broadway. All they must hear are the words echoed last night. ”Be yourself and believe.” This is the power of the stage.

THE TONY AWARDS SHOW is streaming on PARAMOUNT+.
