THE SANTA CLAUSES is a continuation of the Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) saga as Santa Clause. Almost three decades have passed since the SC movies first premiered. The cute son, Charlie (Eric Lloyd), now has his own family and children. The world has changed. Believing in the “magic” of Christmas is not as strong as it once was ions ago.
This series is being promoted as a family show. This is great since there is not much PG television. The “play” on words is never-ending. Tim Allen is a one-liner comedian who does his best with comebacks such as Santastic, Code Sprinkle, and Santagauze. It is very saccharine sweet.
The problem with THE SANTA CLAUSES is how predictable it is. We already heard plot foreshadowing and “the wholesome theme” blatantly spoken within the first two installments. It is not deep. There aren’t any huge character discoveries. Santa Clause is Santa Clause. Elves are adorable and smart. Mrs. Clause must wear glasses and style her hair in a bun. Case closed. This show hints at a new era that will give that “happily ever after” sweet conclusion that our society needs. In all fairness, I cannot recommend this “sequel” to the original story. I think the audience the show is aiming for is far more sophisticated. I am not fond of “dumbing it down.” Nor do I believe that this latest attempt will interest the little ones long term. I am sad DISNEY felt the need to create this “look back or forward” to the previous three movies. Some of us will have to wait to see where the writers will take THE SANTA CLAUSES next.
It is available to stream on DISNEY+.
