THE PICK UP was a waste of time. It held such promise since it featured the comedic finesse of Eddie Murphy. He is one of the comedy legends who could keep audiences rolling on the floor with laughter in the past, but alas, this was not the case. And a double whammy, staring beside him was the funny guy from SNL, Pete Davidson. The two of them together should have been a dynamic duo of one-liners, but this was not their fate.
I blame the writing. It was extremely inconsistent and uneven. It felt like it was phoned in or maybe AI had a hand in creating the script. Either way, the plot had too many holes and moments that were not funny. Most went totally absurd. Don’t get me wrong, I like stupid, crazy humor, but it has to have a plausible foundation underneath. This film asked too much of viewers. No one could suspend their disbelief that many times.
Most of the power of THE PICK UP was left to Keke Palmer, but even she could not sustain the momentum necessary to be considered a hilarious, entertaining film. This is a shame. Eva Longoria’s talent was also underutilized. It was all a pile-up of bits that didn’t hit, even though the car crashes and chase scenes were the best part of the film. It all just wasn’t enough.Â
THE PICK UP is streaming on Prime Video. Perhaps viewers should continue scrolling when this movie appears on the list of choices.Â
