THE LOST WEEKEND: A LOVE STORY is a biographical documentary that covers the love affair John Lennon and Mae Pang, his assistant, had for 18 months during 1973-1975. It is truly a testament to John, the man on stage, and when the cameras stopped rolling. Mae wanted to set the record straight and be accurate. It was not only her story but their love story as well.
This film contained an extraordinary number of photos that probably have never seen the light of day. It was filled with insightful interviews and incredible musical moments. It was like taking a trip back to LA and NY decades ago. It was an homage to The Beatles and what they meant to millions worldwide even after their break-up. This documentary showcased the genius artists that John was able to collaborate with and create some of his finest work. Musicians like Elton John, David Bowie, Ringo, Harry Nilsson, Mick Jagger, and Paul McCartney. It featured John’s reunited relationship with his son, Julian, and his turbulent years with Yoko Ono. But most of all, THE LOST WEEKEND was indeed a beautiful, love story engineered by Yoko herself.
Mae Pang was an integral part of John’s life. There is no doubt about that due to amazing evidence and documentation. Their love for each other looked real, raw, and honest. Mae shared not only the highs of their intimacy but also the reality of life with a legend and only being 23 at the time. She was his rock to find sobriety and helped reinforce his zest for enjoying life.
THE LOST WEEKEND: A LOVE STORY was entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed taking a stroll back to my rock and roll days, making discoveries, and reiterating that “all we need is love.”
