THE LINCOLN LAWYER offered a great season of twists, turns, shocking moments, deaths, and a “family company” audiences will find thoroughly entertaining. The series is a well-oiled machine (a David E. Kelley production), with every character knowing who they are, their direction, obstacles to overcome and put into action. It has an exciting courtroom drama theme yet brings much more to the screen. Everyone evolved, and that is the secret to their high ratings and success.
THE LINCOLN LAWYER is based on a series of novels written by Michael Connelly. I have read every single one. Mickey Haller, portrayed by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, is the perfect choice for this character. He imbues exactly what readers imagine Mickey would look and act like if brought to life. Mickey is a flawed man with high ideals, a tenacious attitude, intelligence, and some common sense, all wrapped in just the right amount of “hunky” looks and physicality. Mickey cares deeply about his clients, which is at this show’s core. His empathy feels authentic, making viewers keep returning for more each year.
The ensemble is sheer perfection. The law office is surrounded by Lorna, (Becki Newton) Cisco, (Angus Sampson, and Izzy (Jazz Raycole). David (Elliott Gould) and Andy (Yaya DaCosta) were added treats, and their frequent dialogue among the cast was a source of pleasure. Each character adds layer after layer to this Los Angeles-based defense lawyer workplace. It is as if the creative team read the minds of everyone who has come to cherish this series. Their lives, hopes, and dreams matter. The writers (especially Gladys Rodriguez) nailed those intentions in every episode. This reviewer could not stop binging. I had to know more at the end of each segment, especially during the final seconds of the huge cliffhanger finale. I was at peace… and bam… I was hooked all over again. I can’t wait.
Kudos to the cinematography. The city landscape of Los Angeles is continually featured, and the camera picks up the many moods of this thriving metropolis. The morning and evening colors bring a new perspective to the vast story and fill every hole with warmth, depth, and wonder. The days are marked with clear perception and perspective.
THE LINCOLN LAWYER does not disappoint. It offers an intriguing perspective on our messed-up judicial system. It gives me hope that there might be a Mickey Haller out there fighting the good fight to help others in need. It is a must-see TV show and is streaming on NETFLIX.
