Last season, THE AFTERPARTY took a 1-episode break from delving into the lives of the possible murder suspects in E7, DANNER. Danner refers to star Tiffany Haddish, the detective who works with Aniq (Sam Richardson) to root out the killer in this series. DANNER’S FIRE is the S2 equivalent/sequel to this but it’s so much worse than its predecessor.
We know Danner wasn’t present during the wedding of Grace and Edgar or its afterparty. She’s not a suspect, but she is one of the stars of the show so it’s time to find out what she’s been up to since season 1. Tiffany Haddish is a charming comedic actress. She makes a great partner to Sam Richardson here, but this episode was too silly to showcase her talent. It was meant to be in the style of an erotic thriller but instead felt like FATAL INSTINCT, an awful, mostly-forgotten mid-90s spoof of BASIC INSTINCT, FATAL ATTRACTION, and similar films.
Back at Edgar’s family’s estate, Travis (Paul Walter Hauser) is up to his usual idiotic ideas and everyone else does or says something suspicious. One high point of this episode was Michael Ealy’s guest spot as a former lover of Danner. Even though their story was foolish, I’m a fan of Ealy’s and liked seeing him show up here. Four episodes left and I don’t think we’re any closer to catching the killer than we were when this season started.
THE AFTERPARTY streams Wednesdays on AppleTV+.
