In the last five episodes of SUNNY, the show has been at its best when the title character is on the screen. However, this last week proved differently, as the stakes finally escalated once Sunny wasn’t on screen. That’s thanks to some plot progression and tension created by the scenario in which Suzie now finds herself. Yes, it’s all contrived, but again Rashida Jones is so damn good it doesn’t matter.
At this stage, it’s clear that SUNNY is not the best show on TV. It’s an intriguing premise that needs more than its Japanese setting, an exciting robot, and a powerhouse performance by Rashida Jones. I hope the creators can say, “Sunny, wake,” and figure out how to unlock the “passcode” to power up this series. However, at this late stage in the game, season one will remain as lost in the woods as its lead characters were in episode five.
It’s available on Apple TV+.
