SINNERS is unlike anything I’ve seen from Ryan Coogler in his career so far, and was not what I was expecting after seeing various versions of the trailer in cinemas over the last several months. It’s bright, scary, funny, surprising, and plays homage to classic horror films like THE EVIL DEAD and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Coogler demonstrates the versatility of his talent and brings muse Michael B. Jordan along for a wild ride.
If you go to the movies as much as I do, it’s been hard to ignore the trailers for SINNERS. They enticed me with the music, the cast (Michael B. Jordan in a dual role), and what I expected to be a seriously scary vampire film set in the 1930s Jim Crow South. SINNERS delivers all of this and more. It’s so much humorous than I was ready for, never to the detriment of the horror.
SINNERS doesn’t shy away from symbolism either. Taking place in 1932 Mississippi, the black characters are all subject to the racist Jim Crow laws of the time. It’s also a year before Prohibition ended, and we’re deep in the heart of KKK country. It reminded me that Coogler celebrates African Americans in everything he does, and rightfully so. The symbolism goes a step further in showing how some characters give in to what they think is a necessary evil for achieving peace, equality, and longevity. Â
SINNERS has a fantastic cast that also includes Delroy Lindo, the incredible newcomer Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jack O’Connell. Jordan owns the film. As an audience, we are lucky to have his long working relationship with Coogler. The characters he plays are identical twins, but you’ll never have to worry about getting them confused. Before the film reached its halfway point, I had forgotten these weren’t two separate actors.Â
Last but certainly not least, I have to give praise to another longtime collaborator of Coogler, composer Ludwig Göransson, and the entire music team behind SINNERS. The score and accompanying music numbers are moving and sexy, and thrilling at all the right times. You might find yourself dancing in your seat. The music here is as much of a star as any of the actors.
