SHOSHANA is a historical drama depicting the conflicts during British control of Israel and Palestinian regions. It covers the period before WWII through Israelโs independence. Although the facts and clips are authentic, SHOSHANA is not a documentary. Interspersed within this deadly period is a love story between a pro-Israeli Jew and a high-ranking British officer. This harrowing story was recently shown at the Spokane Jewish Film Festival.ย
The feature, SHOSHANA, was the Washington state premiere. It highlighted more moments between two British officers, Thomas Wilkin (Douglas Boothe) and Geoffrey Morton (Harry Melling). They both had different opinions as to how to keep the peace. The torture scenes were horrific. The retaliation with constant bombings was a waste of humanity. Every soul vying for freedom. SHOSHANA, portrayed by Irina Starshenbaum, was also the narrator. She was an intelligent, beautiful, courageous woman who was a member of the Haganah and lived 93 years.ย
SHOSHANA was intense and exciting. Throughout the theater, people squirmed in their seats and held their breaths. I was one of them. Some moviesย are not necessarily great films, but they are imperative to watch, learn, and remember the Middle East, with all its vast problems, did not happen overnight.ย
