By some strange “Act of Grace,” OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH has become the most inclusive pirate content ever made. Kudos to HBO for taking the risk to sail the high seas with a swashbuckling adventure that has a lot of “f*ckery,” but a ton more ❤️ .
Rather than just having two well-rounded leads with Stede (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), the creators take the time to flesh out nearly every pirate with empathy that defines their motivations. As a result, I cared about mostly everyone aboard the ship, “Revenge.” Heck, I even cared about a seagull!
Unique shows like OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH don’t come around often. It took a classic genre, infused it with humor, and pushed forward with LGBTQ inclusiveness. The cliffhanger finale is also well earned. Everything set up in opening episodes comes full circle for the Gentleman Pirate to grow. And whoa, what an ending!
In OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH, a character states, “how does it feel to be in love. It feels easy. It’s just like breathing.” A big thanks to David Jenkins and Taika Waititi for creating a TV show that’s so easy to fall in love with. Here’s to season two with a ton more “f*ckery!”
