The ship has set sail on this beautiful series that more people should have boarded to watch. The best works of Taika Waititi combine bizarre humor with empathy. Think of him as this generation’s Wes Anderson, but with the ability to make you fall deeply in love with every character in his stories.
The premiere episodes of OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH mainly was set up. However, these last five episodes have all been empathy-inducing fun. It’s easy to fall in love with each of the pirates a bit more – Stede (Rhys Darby), Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), Jim (Vico Ortiz). And it’s a blast (cannonball optional) discovering each of their fears and, more importantly, how they try to work together.
With WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, RESERVATION DOGS, and now, OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH, it’s clear that Taika Waititi is at the height of his creative game. So I’m all aboard his ship to see what AAARRRRRRR rated content he creates next.
