MID-CENTURY MODERN is a take-off of THE GOLDEN GIRLS but features three gay, older, wildly different male best friends. It features an homage to dating, eating, and especially a testament to friendship.
What makes this show a delight is the comedic and dramatic acting skills of Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, and Nathan Lee Graham. Their timing is ridiculously perfect. The trio can infuse more into a silly one-liner than most stand-up comedians. The writers have ensured the jokes and laughs are non-stop and over the top. Still, in between the laughter, audiences are treated to pearls of wisdom covering such authentic topics as loneliness, not being seen or valued, gay rights, the church vs. gays, grief, and true acceptance for who any of us indeed are. In the end, it is a series about love. I binged the entire season in one night. It made me continually smile.
The fabulous, amazing Linda Lavin is also a huge part of MID-CENTURY MODERN. She portrayed Laneโs mother with class, grace, and creative insight. Watching her deliver glorious zingers and take an extra moment to sit at the piano and sing was a joy. They were memorable moments to be savored by her fans.
The list of guest stars was also an added plus. Be sure to look for Judd Hirsch, Rhea Perlman, Richard Kind, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. What a gathering of talent.
MID-CENTURY MODERN might not be everyoneโs cup of tea. It is wired for a niche audience group. This is how THE GOLDEN GIRLS began their illustrious, powerful series run. You never know what will happen.
It is streaming on Hulu.ย
