MEL BROOKS: THE 99 YEAR OLD MAN S1 SERIES REVIEW 🤩

MEL BROOKS: THE 99 YEAR OLD MAN is a fabulous biographic, two-part documentary about the legendary comedian, actor, writer, director, songwriter, and producer Mel Brooks. It includes bits from all his famous movies along with commentaries from such notable comedians as Ben Stiller, Jerry Seinfeld, Sara Silverman, Gene Wilder, Rob Reiner, Adam Sandler, Dave Chappelle, and Carl Reiner. Even though it is about four hours in duration, every minute is packed with funny, memorable gags and stories. It is very entertaining as long as you are a Brooks’ fan. I am.

This documentary explored all aspects of Brooks’ brilliant career and personal life. We learned the good and the bad. We witnessed his struggles as he rose from poverty to iconic stardom and fame. We were a part of his journey with the love of his life, Anne Bancroft. We listened to the insights offered from his children and grandchildren. In spite of his flaws, Mel Brooks was unanimously proclaimed a genius for all time. This conclusion was in total agreement with all of Brooks’ awards and medals. The Broadway production of THE PRODUCERS ran for seven years and still holds the honor of winning g the most Tony statues in one year. Twelve, to be exact. (HAMILTON only won 11.) There are very few who can say they hold the status of an  EGOT along with a Peabody, a Kennedy Center Honor, WWII Victory Medal, Golden Globes, and  the AFI Lifetime Achievement.

Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio co-directed this thoughtful, outrageous, funny masterpiece. All I can say is bravo. There will never be another Mel Brooks, but thank goodness for all the serious and hysterical schtick Mel Brooks created for  his audiences. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. SPACEBALLS. BLAZING SADDLES. ROBIN HOOD. SILENT MOVIE. THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART ONE and TWO. GET SMART.

And the list is endless. Brooks has said his work was always created from love. The feeling is mutual.

MEL BROOKS: THE 99 YEAR OLD MAN is streaming on HBO MAX.
