MEET CUTE pairs Sheila (Kaley Cuoco), and Gary (Pete Davidson), in a time-traveling dark rom-com. It’s a story that asks the viewers to suspend all disbelief and relive a GROUNDHOG’S DAY moment over and overโฆ
The attraction between these two is palatable, and it is “cute” to watch their bantering and flirting until it isn’t. No one is the perfect match or the perfect man, no matter how hard you try to “shave those corners.”ย This movie sometimes put me on edge because “life is messy, and it’s okay.”ย ย
The theme of MEET CUTE is more profound than you were first led to believe. It deals with issues of suicide, alcoholism, emotional parental abuse, and trust. All these problems help make you who you are along your journey. “If you erase the pain, you can erase the person.” Should you even try? Or perhaps getting through to the next day is all that you need to survive. Heavy questions,ย indeed.ย
The costume and set designers had an easy job in this one. Repetition was the critical element in MEET CUTE. Sheila and Gary worked off each other amazingly well. Their timing and pacing kept it going. I can’t explain why I was compelled to watch. The story was intriguing, but I would have liked more layers to explore about these two. Iย wanted to know the “why” of their coupling.ย
MEET CUTE is engaging and has an exciting premise. But, the writers must decide if it’s a movie about romance or Sci-fi. It is available to stream on Peacock.
