LION SPY: THE HUNT FOR JUSTICE is a documentary and action film that paints a grim picture of the future of the lion species. It is shocking to watch, yet necessary if we want to save this iconic, majestic animal. My heart is still aching from the lack of humanity and kindness towards the animal kingdom.
The film featured Joni “Rogue” Rubin, a photographer turned undercover spy within the disturbing world of “trophy hunters.” She was brave, honest, and brilliant as she shared her newfound knowledge about this endangered species. One hundred years ago, 200,000 lions freely roamed our planet. Today, there are only 20,000. This is mainly due to hunters who yearn to kill a lion and mount their remains on a wall. It is no longer about the thrill of the chase but rather the total extinction of an innocent being.
What hurt the most while watching was the laughter among the hunters after they took their kill shot. Some high-fived and hummed as they congratulated themselves. The washing away of all traces of blood spatter as they stood for a photo shoot towering above their deceased victims was cruel and did not allow for it to be considered an honorable death. It was mind-boggling and heartbreaking.
The cinematography was stunning as Joni roamed with several hunting expeditions. The spectacular sunrises greatly contrasted the silent, hushed tracking of beautiful, blameless lion beasts. I heard myself shouting aloud, “Don’t get up. Stay down,” but to no avail. I don’t know how Joni lasted as long as she did on these expeditions.
LION SPY: THE HUNT FOR JUSTICE deserves the world’s attention and action for the inhumane treatment of lions. This film highlights how we, the common, ordinary people, can make a difference. Their future is in our hands, hopefully before they are gone forever.
It’s available on May 7th via digital download.
