LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE S1E1-E2 🤩

LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE is based on the beautifully written rom-com novel by Laura Esquivel. The epic tale takes viewers back to 1892, deep within the beginning of the Mexican uprising for equality. The series is entirely in Spanish with English voiceovers. It is a stunning story of love, bravery, cowardice, and cruelty.

At its core, the film shares the love affair between Tito and Pedro. Theirs is a rocky road, as seen in just the first two installments. The writers created a magical, visceral path by experiencing Tito’s ability to cook with deep, emphatic feelings. The moments are mesmerizing and, so far, make a huge impact on the couple’s journey. The narrator helps as well. Audiences will find themselves drawn into another country’s traditions and values. It is all a visual feast, to be sure.

My only criticisms are the actors who dub the entire ensemble. I feel we are missing the angst, joy, and betrayal so vividly expressed in each frame. It can be said some things lose much in translation, but I am not giving up on this exquisite narrative.

LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE is just getting started. I have many questions about each character’s motivation and intent, and their chronicle is not complete.

It is streaming on Max.
