LIFE, LARRY AND THE PURSUIT OF UNHAPPINESS is another brainchild from the depraved, sarcastic mind of Larry David. Former President Barack Obama also took part in the creation of this weekly comedy show. It features different comedic sketches highlighting historical moments from our nation’s past.
Larry David is the genius behind CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. Nothing has changed about his type of humor. Most audiences either love him or hate him. He is who he is, and he never changes his delivery or style. He is like that thorn in your side you can’t get rid of, that never goes away. I have always been a huge fan. My whole body cringes and laughs with each schtick he performs, but after watching the first episode of LLATPOU, I found myself not laughing like usual. It just wasn’t a fun watch, and each skit lowered my expectations while sucking the joy right out of my soul. Bummer.
David gave several huge stars a part in each sketch, but not even the likes of Richard Kind or Henry Winkler could elevate my ability to laugh out loud. I believe it all has to do with the timing of the jokes. Some landed, but most grew redundant and fell completely flat. I was surprised, because I was so looking forward to this new series.
LIFE, LARRY AND THE PURSUIT OF UNHAPPINESS only has one episode under its belt. Perhaps Larry will stop shouting all his lines, the scenarios will improve, and loyal fans will readjust their expectations. I will remain hopeful, but for now my emoji rating is not favorable at all.
It is streaming on HBO MAX.
