INVASION returned with a mish-mash pile of character and story arcs that took forever to understand or care about. There were far too many fillers in this third season and not enough sci-fi, nail-biting action for me. The writers gave us glimmers and moments that would have fared far better with fewer episodes and more editing.
The ensemble was oversized, highlighting too many unnecessary subplots. This happened so much that my husband and I thought of creating a drinking game every time Anesha (Golshifteh Farahani) blurted out that she had to get back to her kids. Oh, there were many bad choices and terrible paths to her journey. I would be really drunk if we had any liquor in the house.
Mitsuki (Shioli Kutsuna) was the standout character of INVASION, besides, of course, the aliens. I liked the intellectual side of these types of shows, not solving everything with guns while battling it out. Mitsuki was written very cool and with interesting inner monologues to devour. Watching even more of her would have been better, more entertaining, and more engaging for our brains and imaginations. It was a lost opportunity.
INVASION was simply not as fun to watch as previous seasons. It didn’t offer any guidelines on how we could be better as humanity. At times, it made us look too one-dimensional. I leave it in the viewers’ hands. It just wasn’t enough for me to stir my mind “to go where “no man has gone before.”
INVASION is streaming on Apple TV.
