I believe HACKS will keep viewers within that verbal, fast-paced fighting mode between Deborah and Ava. They are at their best when tensions aren’t quite this high, but this seems to be the path for this usually hilarious duo.
They remind me of the opening train musical number and the PICK A’LITTLE song from THE MUSIC MAN. Deborah and Ava can sure “…Bicker, bicker, bicker…” while “…Pick, pick, pick, pick a’little….” Their timing is quick and leaves no room to breathe. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are amazing, but at what point does it get old and predictable? Are we there yet? I would love to discover something new from either one.
There are some funny appearances from guest stars. More, please. A special dance mom will never suffer from impostor syndrome. We need more of this, too.
HACKS needs a breakout moment. “Wine o’clock” just does not make me smile.
