In episode 5, HACKS took a detour, literally and figuratively, to fill in missing gaps about Deborah’s (Jean Smart), early career. I am not sure if it was necessary, but nevertheless, fun to peel back those “hidden” layers of extra competitiveness with humor.
Deborah is a complicated character. She holds her cards close to her chest. The writers wanted the viewers to really “see” her, so that episode 6 would be a shining light for Deborah’s career. The title says it all with THE CLICK catapulting the tour. I love being a part of Deborah’s audience and watching her do her “schtick.” Entertaining and a hoot.
Along the way, we also learned more about the entire ensemble. There were several poignant and insightful moments. Growing pains is the name of the game. “Masks” are lowered. I found it fascinating. I am thrilled to watch a well-written sitcom for different types of women with real strengths and funny flaws.
HACKS is a creative, original series because it does not hold back. “What you see is what you get.” All I can say is, “more, please!” It is available to stream on HBO/MAX.
