GASLIT is a limited series about the events that led up to the infamous Watergate political scandal. Although based on facts, it also shares the assumed, creative choices and quirks of the characters involved.
Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts) and John Mitchell (Sean Penn) are the glue that holds this series together. They play this couple with strength and a touch of vulnerability. Martha and John were real people filled with flaws. This is obvious in the first two installments. Power is the name of the game in DC and there’s just so many who wanted to be “top dog.” Kudos to the ensemble who make this moment in history come alive once again.
In 1972, I was 23 and looking to my future in teaching. I had read and followed this incident and all that occurred for months after, but I don’t believe I realized how many mistakes were made during the initial break-in. So many details were left to chance and luck. Obviously, this did not work out in the end. I am learning new insight from an old situation. This is quite interesting and entertaining for me.
GASLIT might not for everyone. Even though I know the conclusion, I am hooked and taking it all in once again. I am hoping politicians are listening and watching what not to do and say during an election year.
It is available to stream on STARZ.
