Oh, my heart wept while watching the latest episode of FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL. It highlighted “how the government failed the poorest and most in need” during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as the levees collapsed.
The writers and director showed the audience the chaos, confusion, and lack of leadership through actual clips and interviews. These were dispersed throughout the ensembles’ desperate attempt to save their patients at Memorial Hospital. It quickly became a matter of ethics and morals. Who best could survive? Playing God is not easy, especially by placing green, yellow, red, or black bands on those crying out for help.
I have to say kudos to the actors portraying the doctors and nurses. Their performances were sheer perfection. We felt their anguish, frustration, fear, and buckets of sweat pouring off their bodies in a facility with no power for air conditioning or essential medical equipment. New Orleans looked like a third-world country. Shame on us. I echo their cries….”Do something.”
FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL’s finale is next week. The fifth day is supposed to be the worst. We all must watch. We cannot turn away from moments of darkness and shame. It is imperative to learn from our past. It is must-see TV.
