DEEP COVER is a funny, action-packed improv thriller. Two words I never thought would ever be in the same sentence. It was highly entertaining in a spoofy kind of way. The characters were not to be taken all that seriously, and yet, their use of improv made a huge difference in getting inside the criminal mind.ย
The writers went outside the usual rules to create a zany story, allowing both sides a chance to shine and showcase their talent. The humor involved was of the type that just reached out and grabbed viewers with surprising jokes and one-liners. The dialogue ruptured the absurdity of the story content while keeping it on track, easy to follow, and accept. Truly, this would never happen in real life, and that made the adventure plausibly silly. It was just more fun to let go while practicing the improv mantra of โyes, andโ to anything that was said or done.ย
The casting was a great plus for suspending disbelief, featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, Nick Mohammed, Sean Bean, and Paddy Considine. They worked together like an experienced improv troupe, using impeccable timing to make sure each joke hit. It felt light and believable. I would attend that improv class and feel accepted and protected even while chasing some pretty nasty criminals. Oh, the plot twists really can come fast and furious within an improv mind.ย
DEEP COVER was a surprise. It was a delightful trip through what I did for a living, but never with these results. Thank goodness I was never temped.
DEEP COVER is streaming on Prime Video.ย
