It shares everything…from Joel’s greatest musical moments to his depths of depression, drinking, and despair. At the end of this five-hour journey, I could say I accepted his flaws while still standing in awe of the masterpieces he created. This is a complicated man.Â
The film was truly a perfect dissection of the many sides to Joel’s creative process. It gave fans the inside look at how his portfolio of greatest hits came to be. Billy Joel’s pain and joy were visible. Viewers learn all of this through insightful interviews and hundreds of clips from past performances. No stone was left undone. The good, the great, the bad, and the ugly were held up to the light of the camera. Joel is a consummate poet. He knows who he was and is. It was breathtaking to be along for the ride. His honesty touched my soul. I relived many memories while watching. I was lucky to see Billy Joel live in concert fifty years ago. His total stage command hasn’t dimmed through the years.Â
