AS THEY MADE US ๐Ÿ˜Š

AS THEY MADE US is Mayim Bialik’s first directing, writing, and producing credit of a feature film. She has a definite style that allows her ensemble to do their thing and shine.ย  ย

This movie showcased several big-name actors, such as Eugene (Dustin Hoffman), Barbara (Candice Bergen), Abigail (Diana Agron from GLEE), and Nathan (Simon Helberg from THE BIG BANG THEORY.) These consummate actors were phenomenal in portraying such flawed, realistic, raw characters.ย The tiniest movements, extra-long breaths, and solid facial expressions made all the difference. In addition, their dialogue work was elevated and superb to watch and absorb. The Eugene montage was a masterpiece.ย

AS THEY MADE US is relatable on several levels. The story is about a family who was not perfect, and the parent’s imperfections made their children who they are today. Good and badโ€ฆit is not for us to judge. We all have baggage and rough edges. Some families have more than others. Mayim created a fascinating, sad, dramatic, creative look at life. I wondered if any of the plots were taken from her past. It helped me compare my parents to Eugene and Barbara. It gave me an added appreciation for the childhood I was given.ย

The one thing that did bother me was the traveling back and forth from the present day to the past. It was a choppy ride and tinged with an orange color that got a little old quickly. Smoother transitions would have been more helpful and easier on the eyes and mind.ย

AS THEY MADE USย is an honest peek at a family not communicating at their best. This is common for all humanity. It is worth watching and realizing what everyone wants, in the end, is to be seen and loved. It is available to stream on SHOWTIME.ย
