ABBOTT ELEMENTARY S3E3 GREGORY’S GARDEN GOOFBALLS ๐Ÿ˜Š

ABBOTT ELEMENTARY -โ€œGregoryโ€™s Garden Goofballsโ€ - Gregory is hesitant when kids start hanging out in his classroom at lunch, looking to him for advice as the โ€œcool teacher.โ€ Barbara is shocked to find Tariq is dating the mother of one of her students. I’m the substitute teacher for this week’s review of ABBOTT ELEMENTARY. Before starting class, I need to make a morning announcement. I do not love this show, but I like it a lot.

Regardless of the buzz, you can’t deny the series feels like network TV. My viewing taste tends to steer towards compelling narratives instead of MODERN FAMILY in a grade school. And, I get it. This show has three teachings that are making it a hit amongst audiences, award shows, and has me with perfect attendance:

  1. Characters – The characters are the number one reason to watch ABBOTT. They are all lovable – hell, even the new characters this year from the district are instantly likable. I’d give them all an A+.
  2. Unique Voice – This show is needed. We don’t have anything on TV that displays teachers’ challenges while not being preachy. And it does it with “class.”
  3. Approachability  – Some shows feel like comfort food. And ABBOTT has the comfort of a “homeroom.” It’s unique enough, yet at the same time, it feels like something anyone can watch.

With that out of the way, GREGORY’S GARDEN GOOFBALLS, doesn’t do anything to advance the series. It shows each lead overcoming a challenge, with the standard summary narration at the end. Yet, during the episode, audiences should laugh, smile, and be reminded of some of their favorite teachers from their childhood. It’s powerful TV. And, even though I don’t love ABBOTT, I’ll continue to study… I mean, watch the series evolve.ย

It’s available on ABC and Hulu.
