Happy Halloween 2023!

Do you like scary movies?

It’s time to “be afraid, be very afraid,” as SpoilerFreeReviews has dropped 13 spooky movies for fans to enjoy this PSL season. So join us around the fire as we tell our 13 creepy Halloween favorites.

Night 1: US 🤩

Review by Eli Brumfield, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“The ending of this movie is, well, pretty messed up and chaotic. BUT IT MAKES SENSE. Unlike 90% of American horror films, the conclusion to US makes sense and does not exist to give you one last jump scare. With this film, nothing feels cheap or gimmicky.”

Night 2: COMMUNITY S2E6 EPIDEMIOLOGY 🤩

Review and Illustration by Mike Manalo

“Halloween is a sacred tradition at Greendale! Kicking off with an introduction by George Takei, this is the episode of Community that goes for it. This isn’t a dream. This isn’t a one-off Halloween gimmick. This is a straight-up canon episode where everyone becomes a zombie by eating military rations purchased by an Abba-loving, Gaga-dressed Dean Pelton.”

Night 3: NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 🤩

Review by Ricky J Duarte, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“The 80s were a wild time for horror movies. While many films released in the decade’s deluge of delusional, depraved, and disgusting flicks may have been forgotten over time, 1988’s NIGHT OF THE DEMONS has taken on an afterlife of its own.”

Night 4: GRAVITY FALLS S1E12 SUMMERWEEN 🤩

Review by Aaron Goldstein, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“The self-contained SUMMERWEEN episode is this series at its best. The concept of a scary monster, the Summerween Trickster, seeking revenge against kids who think they are too cool to participate in Halloween is non-stop demented fun.”

Night 5: THE THING 🤩

Review and Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“THE THING plays out almost like whodunnit; something has infiltrated a group of researchers and seems to be picking them off one by one. This isn’t a unique plot per sé, but layering in the science fiction horror elements elevates the film to its groundbreaking, cult classic position.”

Night 6: THE RING 🤩

Review by Jami Losurdo, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“THE RING is not a gory movie, but you might turn away a few times while watching. It’s not quite on the same level as MIDSOMMAR or THE WITCH, but it is more of an older cousin to those than the SAW films or anything in THE CONJURING universe. IT FOLLOWS, a cult-classic horror film from 2014, feels like it could be a younger sibling for sure.”

Night 7: A HAUNTING IN VENICE 🤩

Review by David Freedman – Just Seen It, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“With all the entertainment choices available, it is easy to forget how fantastic a well-crafted movie meant for the theater can delight our senses. A HAUNTING IN VENICE is just such a movie. Kenneth Branagh returns in this classic Agatha Christie mystery as the seminal detective, Hercule Poirot, this time retired and living in Venice.”

Night 8: E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL 🤩

Review by Esta Rosevear, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is an extraordinary film. It makes viewers laugh, cry, and applaud the outcome. It is wrapped with thrills, warmth, and humor that holds up forty years later. It has heart and wonderment.”

Night 9: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER S6E7 ONCE MORE, WITH FEELING 🤩

Review by Aaron Goldstein, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“While the show sometimes suffers from network episodic bloat (145 episodes over seven seasons), one cannot deny what it did to help inspire and shape young adult television. The series had teen angst mixed with loss, love, and belonging. Yet, all of that was bottled up within the characters. That is until ONCE MORE WITH FEELING aired.”

Night 10: THE SIMPSONS S6E6 TREEHOUSE OF HORROR V 🤩

Review and Illustration by Mike Manalo

“Hands down the best Treehouse of Horror in the over 30-year history of the show! Treehouse of Horror V features three all-time classic stories that have never stopped being goddamn hilarious. By order from very funny to funniest, here are the stories.”

Night 11: THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER 🤩

Review by Jami Losurdo, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“Every year since THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE dropped on Netflix in 2018, I look forward to writer/director Mike Flanagan’s next horror series. MIDNIGHT MASS has been my second favorite after HILL HOUSE but THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER stands on equal ground with MASS. Depending on your enjoyment or familiarity with Edgar Allan Poe’s works, your mileage may vary.”

Night 12: FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S 😊

Review by Eli Brumfield, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S is a film that will surprise you in many ways. I won’t go as far as to say that it’s falsely advertised, but it’s only advertising one angle of what it has to present. Believe it or not, there are no less than nine different video games, a novel trilogy, and comics that this film is based on.”

Night 13: IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN 🤩

Review by Esta Rosevear, Illustration by Tarush Mohanti

“IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN is a classic Halloween movie that should be revisited annually. It is “voiced” by kids for children of all ages. I plan to carry on this tradition with my grandson, Aiden. I can’t wait to see him do the Snoopy happy dance.”
