It doesn’t matter if you’re a vampire or not because the one thing all audiences can agree on is that WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS continues to be funny well into its fifth season. This cult show has always been a mixture of special effects combined with a mockumentary style with everyone’s favorite sitcom vampires. Season five premieres with two episodes, and the “stakes” are raised for Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) in a new compelling way that’s anything but “familiar.”
The first episode, THE MALL, is outright hilarious. The idea of having the vampires go to a mall makes for situational comedy gold, especially the Laszlo moments, Collin Robinson (Mark Proksch) as a server, and one extremely funny scene with the Naja doll.
Whereas the second episode, A NIGHT OUT WITH THE GUYS doesn’t soar as high. There’s something about having all the vampires together in hangout fashion that makes this show work so well. And E1 does more of that with the cast roasting each other.
A few of my favorite quotes:
- Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) trying to pronounce “tzatziki.”
- “I can’t be sidetracked by sex portions.”
- “Check yourself before you SHREK yourself.”
Even though season five has a slow-burn plot that I wanted more of, one can’t hide the fact that this show continues to annually be one of the best comedies.
It’s available on Hulu FX.
