WEDNESDAY is such a macabre and fun watch. The writers take viewers right to the edge of horror and then bring everyone back semi-safely while topping the moments with sprinkles of sarcastic, humorous zingers. It is a Tim Burton (BEETLEJUICE, NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS) creation of freaky monsters, gore, and more birds than featured in an Alfred Hitchcock thriller.Â
Charles Addam originally wrote THE ADDAMS FAMILY in the 1930s. The story was brought back to life through the world of TV sitcoms in the ’60s and a movie in the ’90s. WEDNESDAY was the logical spin-off choice to keep this franchise going. She is a beloved, titular character played with authority by Jenna Ortega. Her lightning-fast, deadpan delivery is a delight. Her tenacious attitude to solve the mysteries of Nevermore Academy is creatively admirable. She is surrounded by many spectacular actors, such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, Steve Buscemi, Fred Armisen, Christina Ricci, and of course, the best hand anyone could have by their side. Thing (Victor Dorobantu) is a hoot. Everyone needs a Thing to get through life’s turbulence. The entire ensemble is a match made from Outcasts to die for.Â
WEDNESDAY only premiered the first four episodes. Part two will return on September 3rd with four more. I refuse to give anything away, but just know that fans will not be disappointed. It is filled with new characters blended with the old and familiar. It is as mysteriously goulash as black tears, a Siren’s call, and a scar-faced crow. Normal…right?
WEDNESDAY is streaming on Netflix.
