WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES presented a highly emotional depiction of what life must have been like as the Holocaust began in Poland. Ninety percent of the Jewish population were killed during those few years, with only ten percent surviving. While viewing this particular episode, man’s horrific inhumanity was brought to light. My heart broke over and over as I watched the nightmare unfold for the Kurc family.

There were several scenes that took my breath away. I tried to maintain “no Jewish eyes,” but in the end, I found myself not wanting to hear the senseless gunshots of innocent people fearfully running and crying out for help. There were graphic pictures now framed within my brain and heart. The line “Children give us the courage to face life,” offers me hope, yet I realize that parents would give up their lives for the survival of their child. It was sheer agony that must be witnessed again and again.

There was a moment of ignorant humor entwined with the possibility of being outed. It was a brilliant moment displaying a body part to prove if a man was a Jew or not. Kudos to the writers.

WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES is must-see TV. It encapsulates the power of family bonds and ties. I am not sure most of us today would be able to endure. The final seconds of WARSAW highlighted what it means to want to live. It is streaming on Hulu.
