WE LIVE IN TIME 🤩

WE LIVE IN TIME is a film directed by John Crowley and written by Nick Payne. It was the very first A24 film I saw after getting my AAA24 membership. After the movie, I wanted to take a picture by the poster with my membership card. However, by the time the movie ended, I was sobbing too hard to do anything, much less take a photo.

The film is deeply romantic and touching. From the first scene, audiences will instantly connect to this couple and root for them.

WE LIVE IN TIME follows the story of Almut (played by the lovely Florence Pugh) and Tobias (played by my SOCIAL NETWORK boyfriend, Andrew Garfield) as we watch scenes from their 10-year relationship.

When I first saw the WE LIVE IN TIME trailer, I knew I was in for something good. It included three things I love: Andrew Garfield, A24, and, of course, a golden merry-go-round horse. It took me a week or two to get to the theaters to see it, and during that time, I read many conflicting reviews that it fell short or was absolutely beautiful. I am thrilled to say that it was, luckily, the latter. I left the theater violently sobbing and sobbed on the drive home for a lot longer than I’d like to admit.

The film does not follow a linear plot and has no formula or pattern for what stage of their relationship it shows. However, you will quickly pick up on what era of their life they are in. I did not know this storytelling choice going in; however, I think it’s genius for accomplishing the film’s overall themes. Time goes by so much faster than we can even comprehend, and it just went by right now and will go by in five seconds. It has gone by since you started reading this review. To you, your life is the longest thing you know, but in the grand scheme, everything happening is just fleeting moments on a bigger timeline.

The choice to cast Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh was brilliant, and the A24 team knew what they were doing. Getting two of the internet’s most loved celebrities to be in a rom-com would draw much attention, especially from the Gen Z crowd. I can safely say I do not know if I’ve ever seen two actors with more chemistry than Pugh and Garfield had. I was not alive when the NOTEBOOK came out, and I saw it about eighteen years too late, so it did not have the same effect on me as it does on the rest of the world. I am not comparing this movie to THE NOTEBOOK. However, I would like to think that this movie is like my personal “Notebook” in a way. Walking out of the theater, sobbing, and knowing that true love maybe does exist.

I simply can not wait to watch this film again. I know that it will become one of my sad comfort films. I hope that every time I watch it, I sob just as hard as I did the first time I saw it in theaters. Please see, WE LIVE IN TIME because you will laugh and cry and want to smile at any stranger you see.
