TIME TRAVEL IS DANGEROUS is a lo-fi sci-fi comedy that proves that a great cast, a unique story, and excellent writing can boost a story to out-of-this-world heights. The film follows two bumbling yet loveable thrift store owners, Megan (Megan Stevenson) and Ruth (Ruth Syratt), after they stumble upon a time machine in a back alley hunting for wares for their store.
This movie was anything but predictable – even the seemingly leading title doesn’t let on the absurd twists and turns the film takes. Writers Anna and Hillary Shakespeare and director Chris Reading play with the genre expectations and subvert tropes from the time travel genre without ever being preachy. Ruth and Megan’s journeys with the time machine, although silly, still feel grounded in human emotion.
TIME TRAVEL IS DANGEROUS feels a bit like a RICK AND MORTY episode mixed with the mockumentary style and humor of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, with some nods to BILL & TED. If you’re looking for an easy to watch comedy with enough science fiction to keep the story moving, this is the story for you.
