“Here we go.” The moment audiences have been waiting for on THIS IS US happens with Randall and Kevin meeting to hash out their differences. I am still having a hard time letting go of the greatness this show can be. This week is a perfect example of a good quiet edition that could’ve been better.
Instead of fully focusing on the racially divided conversation, the show flashes back to Randall and Kevin going to the MR. ROGERS show as kids and getting into a fight while drinking in college. While the present-day conversation between the two makes for compelling TV, these subplots take away from the power of the overall story.
When Kevin finally admits his racial jealousy, the show wisely goes quiet and allows the scene to breathe. It’s a brilliant and important moment. From Kevin’s “If” apology statements to the guilt Randall feels for wanting a different upbringing when his adopted family was amazing. It hits the right marks to perfection.
Audiences are once again stuck with what this show has become – a good hour of family drama that will make you laugh and cry. And you know what? Maybe that’s okay in its own right and I am just being too picky.
It’s available on NBC / Peacock.
