When my children, Aaron and Ilisa, were very young, I read THE VELVETEEN RABBIT to them. Even though we are Jewish and didn’t do Christmas, the story is universal for children and adults. It has a simple but endearing theme for us to remember every day.
Everyone wants to feel loved. We all yearn to be seen as our authentic selves. Loving someone unconditionally and knowing the sentiment is mutual makes our souls soar. It should only matter how we “look” on the inside. The outside can appear old and worn, but that means living a life of love and kindness. Rabbits know this…especially velveteen rabbits. Toys can become real if you ask a fairy.
THE VELVETEEN RABBIT shares the magical tale written by Margery Williams. It was only 44 minutes in length, but it packs a powerful, nostalgic narrative. It brought me to tears, even though I know it well. The short was a mix of some animation as well as realistic filming. It didn’t include every page of the book, but it was more than enough and gave audiences an emotional impact and a huge payoff at the conclusion. The ensemble breathed life into these well-worn words. They created a delicate balance of beauty, sadness, fear, and being brave. It was splendidly envisioned for the entire family to enjoy together.
THE VELVETEEN RABBIT is a sweet gem. It is a classic because audiences will want to watch it every Holiday Season. When rabbits say goodbye, they know instinctively a new beginning has begun. They signal this by gently rubbing their paws across their nostrils. “Thank you, rabbit. I love you too.”
THE VELVETEEN RABBIT is available to stream on Apple TV+. Watch it with those you love.
