THE ETERNAUT is an Argentine Sci-fi thriller based on the graphic novel published from 1957 to 59.  It was written by Hector German Oesterheld, who was kidnapped and disappeared in 1977. He was a political activist who opposed the regime in his beloved country. He was an iconic and prolific writer who used his writing to oppose Argentina’s government.
Much is under the surface during a confusing, wild invasion. Most of the turmoil is a metaphor and symbolizes the chaos and confusion Osterheld probably felt in real life. The series is totally in Spanish with English voiceovers. This is a problem because there is a disconnect between languages. No one can substitute for the original actors. The emotional upheavals are never achieved as intended in their native language. I often felt like the translations weren’t in sync. This is a shame since the story holds powerful scenarios and sequences.Â
HOW I SEE IT… This was a difficult series to view since 80% was in total darkness. There was no English AD to turn on for help. Thank goodness, my husband was extremely patient, describing each frame. What a shame. There isn’t an excuse not to include audio descriptions for visually impaired people. I would not recommend THE ETERNAUT for anyone with vision problems. Again, this is a travesty since the series holds many iconic moments within this genre.Â
THE ETERNAUT is strong and powerful entertainment. It is well executed and has a whopping cliffhanger. I hope the production team makes some adjustments so that this important allegory can be shared with an even larger audience when it returns for a second season.Â
THE ETERNAUT is streaming on Netflix.
