Sometimes my opinion doesn’t align with the Audience and Critic Scores for a film on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, that time is now, with THE BAD GUYS. This flat, overly busy animated film from Dreamworks feels like a caper trying to steal your heart. I didn’t care for one character in it. I only cared about feeling guilty since another contributor at SFR, Mike – loved it.
Yet, I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to be “the bad guy” and report I didn’t like this film. Dreamworks’s ZOOTOPIA ripoff, THE BAD GUYS, is not even mid-tier level. It’s in the low-tier next to SHARK TALE, HOME, and THE BOSS BABY. They all have one thing in common – a manic pace that tries to make up for not having a compelling plot.
So I have one positive remark in this review – the one bright spot in THE BAD GUYS is the animation. The cell shading and expressive character eyes 👀 are worth seeing. It’s a pity you’ll have to sit through the film to experience it though.
Instead of watching THE BAD GUYS, re-watch ZOOTOPIA or THE MITCHELLS VS THE MACHINES. Those films have a manic style with heart ❤️. Which, for me, is the key ingredient to all classic animated stories.
It’s available to skip on-demand and in theatres.
