The day weâve all been waiting for is here. Yes, itâs that time again. Taylor Swiftâs new album came out at Midnight(s) tonight! I donât know what era this new record is, but it continues her reign as the worldâs most prominent music artist. While THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT doesnât have as many TikTok-friendly tracks as MIDNIGHTS, it more than makes up for it with its subdued pop complexities. At this point, we can all agree that Swift is a gifted songwriter, and her two muses, Bleachersâ Jack Antonoff and The Nationalâs Aaron Dessner, pair with her better than an âendless February.â
Hereâs my track-by-track breakdown:
1. FORTNIGHT (feat. Post Malone) đ€©
Yes, this song sounds like a direct rip-off of Electric Youthâs âA Real Hero.â And yes, it grows on you with repeat listens. It sets up whatâs to come. This is not an album about love â itâs a break-up empowerment album leading into a new romance (Travis Kelce).
Best lyrics: âI love you, itâs ruining my life.â
2. THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT đ
Another song with a beat inspired by the 80s (Lisa Lisa & Cult Jamâs âHead to Toeâ). Despite being written on a âtypewriter,â this one doesnât quite swing for the fences as much as âFortnight.â Per my friendâs teenage daughter, âItâs mid.â
Best lyrics: âYouâre not Dylan Thomas. Iâm not Patti Smith. This isnât the Chelsea Hotel. Weâre modern idiots.â
3. MY BOY ONLY BREAKS HIS FAVORITE TOYS đ
Outside of the bridge, this song is a bit too generic. It hits a lot of Swiftâs previous themes, and Jack Antonoffâs beat isnât up to the greatness heâs capable of.
Best lyrics: âIâm queen of sand castles he destroys.â
4. DOWN BAD đ€©
And with that, Taylor Swift drops more F-bombs than all of her previous albums in one song. Love the out-of-this-world melody and Swiftâs play-on-words with CLOSE ENCOUNTERS (âencounters closer and closerâ).
Best lyrics: âDid you take all my old clothes? Just to leave me here naked and alone.â
5. SO LONG, LONDON đ€ź
The album needs this dark song before the comedic country turn in track 6. Yet, all I could think while listening was, âSo longâ to the uncatchy song and repetitive lyrics.
Best lyrics: âTwo Graves, One Gun. Iâll find someone.â
6. BUT DADDY I LOVE HIM đ€©
Holy shit! Swift wrote a new country song thatâs witty, funny, and a darker version of LOVE STORY. Easily a top three song on the album.
Best lyrics (too many!):
- âScreaming, âBut, daddy, I love him.â Iâm having this baby. No, Iâm not. But you should see your faces.â
- âAll the wine moms are still holding out. But fuck âem, itâs overâ
7. FRESH OUT THE SLAMMER đ
Melody-wise, FRESH OUT THE SLAMMER has another sick bridge. It also moves Swift from her relationship with Joe Alwyn to Matt Healy.
Best lyrics: âAll those nights you kept me goinâ. Swirled you into all of my poems. Now weâre at the starting line, I did my time.â
8. FLORIDA!!! (feat. Florence + The Machine) đ
Florida might be âa helluva drug,â but this song isnât. I love hearing Florenceâs voice on anything, yet the song doesnât support the power of her vocal range.
Best lyrics: âLittle did you know your homeâs really only a town youâre just a guest in (Florida). So you work your life away just to pay.â
9. GUILTY AS SIN? đ€©
Best lyrics: What if heâs written âMineâ on my upper thigh only in my mind. One slip and falling back into the hedge maze. Oh, what a way to die.â
Did Swift drop two previous song references in the same song verse? If so, âAm I allowed to cryâ now? In GUILTY AS SIN? Swift pays homage to âMineâ and âLabyrinthâ in the same breath. That alone makes this song worthy of đ€©!
10. WHOâS AFRAID OF LITTLE OLD ME? đ
A revenge song that feels like a subtle version of âLook What You Made Me Doâ and âThis Is Why We Canât Have Nice Things.â
Best lyrics: âCrash the party like a record scratch as I scream.â
11. I CAN FIX HIM (NO I REALLY CAN) đ€ź
Lyrically, this is a complex song about learning the hard way that even if you love someone, you canât change them. Yet, musically, I was bored.
Best lyrics: Iâll show you heaven if youâll be an angel, all mine.â
12. LOML đ€©
The #ImNotCryingYoureCrying break-up song of the album. Also, I think Swift referenced Whitney Houstonâs âDidnât We Almost Have It Allâ with the song lyrics âAlmost Had it All.â â€ïž
Best lyrics: âYou and I go from one kiss to getting married. Still alive, killing time at the cemetery. Never quite buried.â
13. I CAN DO IT WITH A BROKEN HEART đ€©
If track 6 is the country song hit on the album, track 13 is the pop one. I already imagine TikTok videos with people lip-singing, âIâm so depressed, I act like itâs my birthday⊠every day.â I CAN DO IT WITH A BROKEN HEART is the saddest lyrically and the happiest musically. And thatâs part of the magic of Taylor Swift.
Best lyrics: âIâm so depressed, I act like itâs my birthday⊠every day.â
14. THE SMALLEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED đ€©
Best. Bridge. On. The. Album. Thank you, Aaron Dessner, for producing this near-perfect song.
Best lyrics:
- âYou didnât measure up in any measure of a man.â
- âAnd I donât even want you back, I just want to know.â
15. THE ALCHEMY đ
Yasss, Swift finally finds love for her tortured poet heart. Noooo, this song isnât as good as her new love to Travis Kelce deserves.
Best lyrics: âHe jokes that itâs heroin, but this time with an E.â
16. CLARA BOW đ
Itâs a fantastic finale where the message doesnât completely land, but producer Aaron Dessner once again kills it.
Best lyrics: âThe crown is stained, but youâre the real queen.â
Just like âClara Bow,â Taylor Swift has edge like she never did. With THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, the futureâs bright, dazzling.
The album is available on all music streaming services.
