The latest SONIC movie owes its success to Jim Carrey rather than the blue hedgehog himself. Beyond a “shadow” of a doubt, director Jeff Fowler has turned this one-note video game franchise into a sustainable trilogy and TV series. And that’s all thanks to the voice talent of Ben Schwartz, the likability of James Marsden, and the legendary Jim Carrey. In #3, Jim Carrey will “galvanize” younger audience members as they realize why he was, and still is, one of the funniest performers ever to grace the screen.
By now, we know the drill in the SONIC movies. They are:
- The movie will open with “Donut Man,” telling Sonic the movie’s theme. This time – “listen to your heart.”
- A big bad will get stronger than last time with a new, more nefarious plan.
- A McGuffin that’s hard to acquire. In #3, it’s an unoriginal key card.
- A new character’s backstory. Audiences will learn about Shadow, voiced by the always-memorable Keanu Reeves.
- A post-credits zinger setting up the next film that I dare not spoil.
If you’re okay with that formula, you will love SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3. As for me, I can’t wait for the next Sonic film in what has become some of the best modern-day popcorn films to enjoy with the whole family.
It’s available in theatres.
