I’m “afraid” that RICK AND MORTY’s bumpy seventh season stuck the landing. I’m no “fearologist, but I highly recommend joining the “fear hole club” in this year’s season finale.
What worked so well this year was watching Rick and Morty emotionally grow into kinda good people. In a brilliant dialogue sequence, Rick discusses how LOST ended in a different world, and the response is simply that Jack and Sawyer defeat the fog monster at the end of season one. They then discuss how TV series, without a planned ending, are forced to repeat the same themes and story beats. For a minute this season, it seemed as though R&M was destined to do the same. But after UNMORTRICKEN, the show forever shifted into something else. Yes, there are some missteps along the way, but this is fantastic growth for a series that has been around for a decade. And much more than can be said for the horrendous church ending of LOST.Â
Some of my favorite quotes this week:
- “I’m old, and we have puke mouth.”
- “Time travel is the long-island iced tea of science fiction.”
- “Everyone is scared of love, dipsh*t. You learn that in your 20s.”
I recommend audiences watch the (w)hole seventh season of R&M. Underneath the gross-out humor, ridiculous violence, and genre spoofs is a show about change, and it’s emotionally up for any challenge you might find in a Denny’s bathroom.
It’s available on Adult Swim.
