Thank you, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, for creating RICK AND MORTY! I appreciate how you can tell an effortless multi-verse time-bending story without overexplaining it like LOKI. This show’s sci-fi is so complex, yet somehow it’s always less about the time-travel mumbo-jumbo and focuses on the hilarious hijinks, character development, and pop culture references (ex. Nintendo 69).
Season 5 kicks off with a Jessica-focused episode. It’s fun watching Morty attempting the perfect date. But it’s even more fun watching him fail as he tries to get aged wine from another universe. While Morty attempts to woo Jessica, Rick faces a new arch-nemesis, the ocean king Mr. Nimbus. He appears not to be much of a villain on the surface, but he proves to be so much more. Meanwhile, Jerry and Beth’s relationship evolves as they work through their marriage issues. Heck, every character in this series premiere has a meaningful character arc except for Summer, who’s sent on a fetch quest off-camera for most of the premiere.
As Jessica realizes she no longer wants to “be the object in another’s story,” one can’t help but wonder if Morty will eventually learn the same with Rick. But, even if he doesn’t ultimately have that character growth, I’m along for this wild ride to watch what happens next week!
It’s available on Adult Swim.
