E4 and E5 of OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH was more of a slow burn for our two favorite pirates, Stede (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). While the romance and maturity of the pirates aboard are whimsical, likable, and heartfelt, the actual tension is sorely lacking. The stakes were minimized and given a backseat while audiences saw if the caring yet brutal pirates could figure out their disputes to love again.
While E4 takes a detour into having a guest star that helps Stede and Blackbird, E5 was downright hilarious as it played like spoof horror. Both episodes are enjoyable and easy to watch, but I long for more after last year’s stellar first season.
