After forty-five episodes of ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING (OMITB), it’s clear that the series is on its “Last Gasp,” and running out of plot twists and inventive murders. Season five has consistently been just okay. If it weren’t for the trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, I would’ve given up on it after the first season. However, those three keep me coming back for their award-winning chemistry.
TONGUE TIED has the good fortune of having the funniest sequence this season. Watching Steve Martin and Martin Short’s comedic joust was a reminder that these two still have it in their golden years. I never thought a bit filled with “testosterone” could be so hilarious.
Elsewhere, the series officially gets “tongue-tied” as it focuses on the workers versus the residents in the Arconia. Each supporting character acts like a caricature from a skippable SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE sketch. Even Keegan-Michael Key is embarrassing, making old-timer sound effects.
Final Thought: I want to see Gomez, Short, and Martin on TV. At this point, though, I’d be happy to see them in another inventive series (or weekly comedy special) instead of being trapped in the Arconia.
It’s available on Hulu.
