Oh, what a bumpy ride it has been to get to the fifth finale of ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING. Riding a roller coaster might be easier than solving a beloved character’s murder by our famous podcast trio, Oliver, Charles, and Mabel. (Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez) Along the way, many famous Hollywood actors made an appearance behind Arconia’s hallowed gates. It often felt like a revolving door, ushering in Meryl Streep, Nathan Lane, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Richard Kind, Dianne Wiest, Bobby Cannavale, Tea Leoni, Christophe Waltz, Beanie Feldstein, Renee Zellweger, and Keegan-Michael Key, to name just a few. Whew! Now that’s a guest list! Yet, in all honesty, the best moments of this show are not about the guest stars but rather about the time spent with the original sleuth-solving threesome. They are the foundation for OMITB’s successful run.
I have to say, episode ten wrapped up every question fans might be staying up nights pondering. Fast-pacing got everything explained in record time and put to rest. I had no doubts, after all, OMITB has been renewed for a sixth stab at solving another murder. Those cliffhangers don’t lie.
It hasn’t always been easy watching this past season. Several installments were unnecessary and did not move the story or character arcs forward. I sincerely hope the writers consider reducing the weekly quantity while maintaining more quality, while keeping Short, Martin, and Gomez at the forefront of all action and dialogue. This is the strength and power of OMITB, bringing the best comedic lines to the audience’s funny bones so we can laugh with abandon. Lines like “I wanted to be that broccoli,” and “She knew that finger.” Hilarious. More please.
ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING is a conundrum at the moment. I want to return. I want to laugh. Let’s hope the creative team is listening.
