The nostalgia of growing up with MICKEY’S CHRISTMAS CAROL fills our home with warmth and Christmas spirit. That said, times move on, and generations slowly get older. So, the charm of the hand-drawn animation and the symphony of crossover appeal from classic Disney characters is lost on this generation. The classic that was is no longer getting the airtime it deserves. And that puts a damper on Christmas.
Anchored by cinema-quality traditional animation and led by the late and legendary Burny Mattinson, who we lost earlier this year, MICKEY’S CHRISTMAS CAROL is gorgeous, hilarious, and ultimately one of the most heartwarming specials in the holiday season.
This was Disney’s Avengers before, well, Disney’s Avengers. The use of classic Disney characters and familiar faces utilized in pitch-perfect roles (Scrooge as Scrooge, c’mon) to tell a classic story of love, loss, and change made me incredibly excited as a kid and still does as an adult. We love these characters, and much like watching a play with the best actors in the world, every second of screen time with every character I grew up with filled me with excitement.
But more than that, it’s a reminder of why we loved Disney in the first place. There’s an innocence and beauty to everything we see in this holiday special that feels uncorrupted. And a special that would serve as a much stronger tribute to Disney’s 100-year anniversary than a mediocre Easter egg hunt of a film such as WISH.
Do not let this gorgeous and cheerful holiday classic disappear.
