MICKEY 17 😊

MICKEY 17 is the brainchild of Bong Joon Ho, (PARASITE) a three-time Academy Award winner.  His films typically explore social issues intertwined with layers of dark comedy. Although the premise was fascinating, I didn’t think it quite nailed a bull’s eye.

MICKEY 17 is made for sci-fi buffs who love a little more sauce on their plate. The concept offered a creative perspective on anti-immigration issues. Exploring space in any century could reveal mountains of expendable multiples, whether standing or just of the creeper variety. The movie will keep the audience’s attention while recognizing a myriad of humanity’s flaws.

I was impressed with Robert Pattinson. (TWILIGHT, THE BATMAN) I found him unrecognizable both physically and vocally. He portrayed Mickey with pizazz, utilizing solid acting skills. He was surrounded by a slew of great characters, especially Natasha (Naomi Ackie), Kenneth (Mark Ruffalo), and Yifa (Toni Collette).

The first act of MICKEY 17 was strong and held great promise, but somewhere in act 2, the story lost some of its shine. This made it difficult to stick the ending. It was a good movie, just not great, and a bit of a disappointment considering the writer, director, and all the available talent. It just felt like it could, would, or should have been so much more.

MICKEY 17 is streaming on Max.
