IMBALANCE played at SBIFF (Santa Barbara International Film Festival), and I had the opportunity to see an early look. Here’s my spoiler-free take:
IMBALANCE was a philosophy-driven rom-com. It brought up deep questions from the golden age of thinkers. How do we know what we know? Which part of us has the most control…the head or the heart? How do we get to the truth of the matter when surrounded by the constant noise of social media? Philosophers have always asked the questions. How do we find the answers?
IMBALANCE featured a strong ensemble of actors, which included Sharon Lawrence, Nicholas Gonzalez, Karin Collison, and Joel Polis. The romance was intriguing, yet very predictable. The yearning angst was viscerally visible every painful step of the way. It brought up the complicated aspects of when love takes over solid careers: how does anyone survive, let alone learn to move on? The film felt a hair too long. A bit more editing would have produced an even tighter tale of lust, but it was refreshing to be a part of a story that featured middle-aged passions and longing.Â
IMBALANCE will leave audiences questioning their life choices and wondering whether it is necessary to make detailed plans when perhaps it is a more enjoyable ride not to know what will happen next. Time to amend your journey’s syllabus.Â
ALL OF THE ABOVE had its world premiere at SBIFF on Fri 2/6 – 9:00 AM.
